The most magical month of the year. Not because my birthday lands in the middle, but because old crusty mule deer bucks start showing themselves during the rut. Deer patterns and weather begins to change. There isn’t anything I look forward to more. I’ve got a few days after some other hunts to get it done with the bow. Good luck to all of you out chasing big ole stinky bucks!
Sitting any where from 30 yards to 200 yards from a big herd of elk with 11 bulls and close to 80 head of cows with a bow undetected is poetry. I felt this Zach Bryan poem was fitting.
This was the most miserable, wet, cold, yet memorable hunt I’ve had while hunting solo. I had only 1 day to hunt and I knew it was going to suck, but that didn’t matter. I had set a goal and had one thing on my mind. Get a bull down! After a 3.8 mile hike in to 8,450 feet I had put myself within striking distance. 6 hours of shadowing this herd a nice 5 point presented me with a 42 yard shot. I drew back, found my sim and Mike Tyson “PUNCHED THE TRIGGER!” Joel Turner would be so disappointed in me 😂. My arrow hit its mark and I watched the bull run 50 yards and tip over within sight. About 1 minute later elk were running all around me and a giant 6x7 bull stopped 16 yards away broadside.
